As you may have known, It is compulsory for foreigners to participate in health insurance (HS) in Vietnam, which not only support your health issue but also is economical for your pocket. There are some international hospitals with excellent facilities, service but comes with enormous fee. For example, if you go to a state hospital in Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh city) to examine general health condition, the fee is about 8 USD to 15 USD and it will be 45 USD to 100 USD in an international hospitals, which is a huge difference. So it is recommended by me that foreigners in Vietnam have to attend HS for these reasons:
- You can save a lot of money (The government usually pay 80 - 100% health fee for your state HS; the employee will pay 70% and employers will pay 30% for State HS).
- Contribution to Vietnamese health fund.
- Save a lot of people (especially in rural area).
Usually, company that hires foreign workers will buy MS for them. But how about their families (in case they bring their families to Vietnam to live for a long time)? There are new regulations that allows foreigners who stay provisionally (certificated) to buy State HS following family-way. It means that if the first person in a family pay 100% HS fee, the next one will be 70%, and 60%... so you can save a lot from this (It is regulated that the paying fee for State MS shall not exceed 6% of monthly salary).
I also hear that many foreigners choose to buy health insurance from Insurance company, but I think it is not an excellent option. Why? Because the fee for this is usually much higher than State HS, also the fee will be contributed to Insurance company 's profit, not to help other people. These kinds of insurance are only suitable if you have to travel a lot.
